My
students name is Justin Reid. Justin
started out like many of our students
thinking that he would like to become a
firefighter someday. I
met him in our Fire B1 intro to fire
protection class. After a few weeks into
the semester one chapter talks about the
many different facets of the fire
service, and I mention here that not
everyone in this classroom will become
firefighters, but I talk about all the
other positions like fire inspector and
fire protection engineer that don't
require you to first be a firefighter.
Something must
have connected with him because about a
two years later Justin had called me
with some good news he had been accepted
into the University of Maryland Fire
Protection Engineering program. I
congratulated him and asked him to stay
in touch and let me know how things were
going. The next thing I new he was
graduating and had a job offer with an
engineering firm in Washington DC. I
once again congratulated him and told
him if he ever made it back to
California to give me a call, he said he
would.
A year or two
went by and I received another call from
Justin, he said he was offered a job out
in LA working for an engineering firm, I
told him if you ever make it back to
Bakersfield to give me a call. Well you
know the rest of the story, Justin is
working for RL Hardcastle as a fire
protection engineer and teaches fire
protection systems for Bakersfield
college. |
